The Xylem Highway

conductive vessel in Mountain Mahogany
emc.maricopa.edu

Our circulatory system is made up of blood vessels, a plant's circulatory system is made up of xylem and phloem. Xylem consists of two types of cells known as tracheids and vessel elements. These form tube-shaped structures which provide pathways for water and minerals from a plants roots to the leaves. Vessels are found only in angiosperms or flowering plants.

" Empty Vessel"

"Empty vessel" literally means a container with nothing inside.  However, like the word vessel this phrase has several connotations. In literature it was Plato who supposedly said " as empty vessels make the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers." I suppose he meant that foolish people and braggarts are the most talkative and noisy.

In the world of business the "empty vessel approach" refers to a lack of leadership and employees who won't take individual responsibility. You don't have to work for the government to experience this.  Also from a business standpoint, empty vessel names are names of products, brands, or even companies which have been invented so as not to offend anyone. In trying to please everyone the products become invisible because the name does not describe the product. Just for fun take a trip to the American Sign Museum http://www.signmuseum.org/ and think about businesses as empty vessels.

Hollis Hammonds

I think the most interesting use of the phrase empty vessel is as a metaphor for someone who has a willing mind ready to receive teaching. Young children can be described as empty vessels ready to learn. The artist Holis Hammonds http://www.hollishammonds.com/ created drawings of empty bowls signifying potential and possibility.

Egg-citing Kid Stuff

Renderings of engraved South
American San Tribe ostrich eggs.
Previously, I wrote about how throughout history the egg shape inspired artists and represented natural harmony, life, birth, creation, and potential  As a follow-up, I offer you some egg-citing activities you might enjoy doing yourself or with a child.
  • Download pictures of South African San Tribe engraved ostrich eggs and color them in. Ancient artists used a special paint made from animal fat and charcoal. Or make up your own design.
  • Start seedlings. Fill an egg carton with empty, rinsed egg shell halves and poke a hole in each one for drainage. Then add potting soil and one or two seeds to each shell. When the seedlings are big enough to put outside, just crack the shell at the bottom and plant them, shell and all. The shells are biodegradable.
  • Check out this gorgeous site. www.eggartguild.org for ideas to decorate your own eggs. Don’t forget eggs come in many colors; Tinamous birds in South America have emerald green shells, robin eggs are blue and falcons have brownish/orange shells.
